Subject: Yuba County Board of Supervisors’ Opposition to Proposition 50
Dear Governor Newsom,
On behalf of the Yuba County Board of Supervisors, we write to express our firm opposition to Proposition 50, the proposed constitutional amendment that would temporarily suspend California’s independent redistricting commission for congressional districts and replace it with new maps drawn by the Legislature, for the following reasons:
This proposed legislation sets a concerning precedent of politicizing this intended nonpartisan, transparent process, and risks further eroding public confidence in government.
Using the Legislature to counteract redistricting efforts in other states undermines the intended responsibility put upon citizens when the Voters FIRST Act passed in 2008. It has become an independent system that requires a significant amount of time, public meetings, and voter input to give commissions a full picture of their communities and how they should be represented.
In the midst of chaotic politics and distrust in the election process, it is more important now than ever to “take the high road” by not acting retaliatory to what happens outside our State and commit to serving the California Constitution and the people we were elected to serve by upholding the existing independent redistricting commission that is free of political manipulation.
